This fall’s auction of Modern Art + Design contains several masterpieces by Sweden’s leading modernists such as GAN, Sigrid Hjertén, Nils Dardel and Esaias Thorén. Bukowskis is proud to present a wide range of Matisse’s students, where Sigrid Hjerténs masterpieces ”Iván i fåtöljen” (Iván in the armchair, 1915) and "Det blå lokomotivet” (The Blue Locomotive, 1919), are two of the highlights.
For a few years (1908-1911), the French artist Henri Matisse led an art school called Academié Matisse in Paris. The academy became important for the students future artistic expressions. Nils Dardel’s ”Frälsningsarmén” (The Salvation Army) from 1916 is an important work from this avantgarde period. Bukowskis also offers several works by Gothenburg colorists such as Inge Schiöler and Carl Kylberg.
The art department contains additional highlights like Gösta Adrian-Nilsson’s ”Marin”. – GAN was an eclectic artist, as a part of the avant-garde, he constantly sought new impressions. The artwork ”Marin” was produced in Paris in 1920. As GAN felt a personal and erotic attraction to seamen and sailors, they are often recurring in his production. We are extremely happy that the artwork is a part of this fall’s auction, says Lena Rydén, Specialist Modern Art.
The furniture and design department includes a curated selection from the golden age of Swedish design history, the 1920s Swedish Grace. The Swedish elegant style broke through at the Paris Exhibition in 1925, followed by the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, 1927. The Swedish pavilion at the Paris Exhibition was decorated with furniture and crafts from Carl Hörvik, Uno Åhrén, Anna Petrus, and Simon Gate, all of which are represented in the auction.
– We are pleased to announce several of the beautiful objects that were shown at the Paris Exhibition in 1925 such as Simon Gate’s ”Bacchus” bowl as well as the four reliefs, designed to one of the three tables exhibited at the design exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1927, says Eva Seeman, Specialist Design and Modern Art.
